Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Phyllophora is Phyllophora rubens (Linnaeus) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ptilophora spissa (Suhr) Kützing.
Type Information
Type locality: "Cap, von Drège [South Africa (between the Umzimkulu and Umkomaas rivers, Natal)]; (Suhr 1840: 262) Notes: This type locality was first noted by Papenfuss (1940: 214) (Silva et al., 1996). According to Tronchin et al. (2003: 88), the type specimen, collected over a century ago in the southern KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa, may be an aberrant form of another species from the same locality.
