The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mesophyllum engelhartii (Foslie) W.H.Adey.

Holotype: TRH, unnumbered (Riosmena-Rodriguez & Vásques-Elizondo 2012).
