Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum herporhizum Setchell & N.L.Gardner.

Taxonomic note
Dawson (1966: 12) suggested that S. brandegeei probably represented only a variant of S. herporhizum. Andrade-Sorcia & al. (2014, p. 206), through morphological and molecular studies, confirmed this. - (11 January 2024) - Francisco F. Pedroche
