The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidiopsis is Gelidiopsis variabilis (Greville ex J.Agardh) F.Schmitz.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ceratodictyon tenue (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) J.N.Norris.

Type locality: Santa Rosalia, near Guaymas, Mexico.; (Setchell & Gardner 1924: 749) Type: Marchant, no. 104; Cast ashore; CAS; (Dawson 1953: 85) Notes: Isotype on sheet 21, including slides 020 and 1352, in HAHF (Dawson 1953: 85). Material sterile.

Adjective (Latin), thin, fine, slender (Stearn 1983).
