Nomenclatural notes
"Chara baueri is a rare species throughout its range, perhaps one of the rarest species in Europe. Although it was described early in the nineteenth century, many of its habitats disappeared within a short period of time (Pukacz et al., 2012). After thorough searching it has been rediscovered in both northern Germany (Raabe, 2009) and Poland, and more recent discoveries have been in regions outside its original distribution (Langangen and Sviridenko, 1995; Urbaniak and Gabka, 2014). It has been listed on the Red List of several countries (e.g. Sieminska et al., 2006; Gärdenfors, 2010), but is often classified as Data Deficient due to a lack of records. It has been assessed as "Endangered" in Europe and globally (see Chap. 9). Conservation of Chara baueri will likely depend on conservation of its particular habitat, i.e. temporary wetlands that are shallowly flooded." (Casanova 2024). - (08 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry

Conservational note
"Chara baueri was amalgamated with the Australian species Chara muelleri (A. Braun) F. Muell. by Wood (1962). However, the Australian material has been shown to be a different species (Casanova, 2014). Chara baueri seems to have always been rare. It was collected several times in the nineteenth century in what is now Berlin, the last time in 1869. After that, the plant was presumed extinct. It was surprisingly recorded from Kazakhstan (Langangen and Sviridenko, 1995), and rediscovered (Raabe, 2009) in a few small bodies of water in Brandenburg and Poland (Urbaniak and Gabka, 2014). The data for Sweden, Belarus and Lithuania were considered unlikely by Migula (1889-1897). Most recently it has been found in Serbia in very small and shallow ponds (Trbojevic et al., 2020). Trbojevi´cetal. (2020) hypothesise that the species has been overlooked because its habitat is atypical for charophytes (Fig. 21.4)." (Casanova 2024). - (08 January 2025) - M.D. Guiry
