The type species (lectotype) of the genus Characium is Characium sieboldii A.Braun.

[in Oedogonium fonticola A.Braun ex Hirn]; Neotype (Lectotype?): the single cell illustrated as no. 6 in Tab V, F n Braun (1855): Epitype: strain ACOI 2423 (cryopreseved), deposited at ACOI (epitype) (Amaral et al. 2020: 200, fig. 1) Notes: in Oedogonio fonticola (INA).

Adjective (Latin), very small, minute (Stearn 1983).
