The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Reinboldiella filicula (Harvey ex Womersley) Barros-Barreto & Maggs.

[South Australia, Australia]; (Womersley 1978: 238) Holotype: Womersley; 13 March 1977; in low eulittoral pools on offshore reef, on basal leaves of Sargassum lacerifolium; AD; A47978 - “Marine Algae of southern Australia” No. 182 (Womersley 1998: 412) Notes: Womersley (1998: 412) notes that there are also isotypes "with the same number."
Origin of Species Name
Noun (Latin), diminutive of "filix" a fern, also a particular fern. (Brown 1946).
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Habitat
Apparently always epiphytic on larger, usually cartilaginous, brown and occasionally red algae (Womersley 1978: 240).
