Type locality: "durch ganz Europa" [throughout Europe including Nordhausen, Hamburg, Schleusingen, Halle, Stuttgart, Berlin (Germany), Thun (Switzerland), Triest, Genua (Italy), Falaise (France)]; (Kützing 1844: 75) Notes: "The type material of A. microcephalum was previously illustrated by Lange-Bertalot & Ruppel [1980 (Herb. Kützing, no. 287, from Triest), pl. 3, figs 83–96 (LM), pl. 9, figs 278–281 (SEM)]; Lange-Bertalot & Krammer [1989 (syntype, Herbar Kützing 836, from Zürich), pl. 51, fig. 12 (LM)]; Potapova & Hamilton [2007 (isotype slide BM 18434 made of Kützing’s material from Triest, Natural History Museum, London), pl. 4, figs n, o (LM)]." (Novais & al. 2015: 111). It is not clear if the material from Trieste has been formally designated as lectotype.
