The type species (holotype) of the genus Melosira is Melosira nummuloides C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melosira inflexa (Roth) Guiry.

Adjective (Latin), moniliform, cylindrical but contracted at regular intervals like a string of beads (Stearn 1983).
