Type locality: Møllegrund, off Hirshals, Skagerrak, Denmark; (Rosenvinge 1909: 72-73) Syntype: L.K. Rosenvinge; 8 August 1899; On Polysiphonia stricta; C; (Brodie & Irvine 2003: 59) Notes: Womersley (1994: 26) notes that the type material was found on Polysiphonia urceolata, 11-15 m deep.

Adjective (Latin), irregular (Stearn 1983).

Taxonomic note
In Gargiulo et al. 1987 (J. Phycol. 23: 351) the plants shown as figs 1-5, 9 are actually Sahlingia subintegra and some other plants figures may also be this latter species (J.A. West, pers. comm.). - (21 June 2007) - G.M. Guiry
