Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Stauroneis is Stauroneis phoenicenteron (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Craspedostauros decipiens (Hustedt) E.J.Cox.

Cox, E.J. (1999). Craspedostauros gen. nov., a new diatom genus for some unusual marine raphid species previously placed in Stauroneis Ehrenberg and Stauronella Mereschkowsky. European Journal of Phycology 34: 131-147, 57 figs, 3 tables.

Participle B (Latin), deceiving (used of a species closely resembling another) (Stearn 1983).
