The type species (lectotype) of the genus Nitella is Nitella opaca (C.Agardh ex Bruzelius) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitella flexilis f. spanioclema (J.Groves & Bullock-Webster) Raam ex Guiry & D.M.John.
