The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cocconeis is Cocconeis scutellum Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Campylodiscus clypeus (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg ex Kützing.

Type locality: Kieselguhr von Franzenbad in Böhmen [diatomite from Frantiskovy Lázne Spa, West Bohemia, Czech Republic; (Poulícková & Jahn 2007: 138) Lectotype: BHUPM, Ehrenburg Collection; Geographical Preparation No. 430103a bl (Poulícková & Jahn 2007: 138, fig. 5) Notes: fossil (INA).
