Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Cocconema is Cocconema cistula (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Brebissonia lanceolata (C.Agardh) R.K.Mahoney & Reimer.

Type Information
Type locality: "Im August 1833 bei Wismar" [Baltic Sea, Germany].; (Jahn & Kusber 2004: 580) Notes: Lectotype (designated by Jahn & Kusber 2004: 580): Preparation No. 540044-1 in BHUPM (Jahn & Kusber 2004:fig. 5). The lectotype specimen corresponds to specimens on drawing sheet No. 308 in BHUPM (Jahn & Kusber 2004: figs 2, 3) which are from Wismar material. Fig. 4 in Jahn & Kusber (2004) is a complete cell from original material No. 540044-2 in BHUPM.
