Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pinnularia is Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Navicula radiosa Kützing.

Adjective A (Latin), acute, pointed; i.e. narrowing gradually and making an angle of less than 90° (Stearn 1983).
