Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Alaria is Alaria esculenta (Linnaeus) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Alaria marginata Postels & Ruprecht.

Type Information
Type locality: Beringön. Ett sterilt exemplar funnet uppkastadt på stranden bland en massa andra Laminariaceer. Den tillhör utan tvifvel den mäktiga Laminariacé-formation, som vid nämnda ö tinnes utbildad på sublitoralregionen. [Bering Island. A sterile specimen found cast up on the beach among lots of [a] second laminariaceae. It belongs without doubt, the mighty Laminariacé-formation, which at the said island there was educated at sublittoral region] ; (Kjellman 1889: 36)
