Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Ecklonia is Ecklonia buccinalis (Linnaeus) Hornemann.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ecklonia cava subsp. stolonifera (Okamura) S.Akita, K.Hashimoto, T.Hanyuda & H.Kawai.
