Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Heterocapsa rotundata (Lohmann) Gert Hansen.

Adjective (Latin), almost circular, with length breadth ratio of about 6 to 5 (Stearn 1983).
