The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cryptomonas is Cryptomonas ovata Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Tetrabaena socialis (Dujardin) H.Nozaki & M.Itoh.

Nozaki, H. & Ito, M. [as 'Itoh'] (1994). Phylogenetic relationships within the colonial Volvocales (Chlorophyta) inferred from cladistic analysis based on morphological data. Journal of Phycology 30(2): 353-365, 10 figs, 3 tables.
