The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pelagodinium bei (H.J.Spero) Siano, Montresor, Probert & Vargas.

Type locality: California Current, Pacific Ocean, Lat. 35º57'’54"" N, Long. 124º38’'42"" W.; (Spero 1987: 316) Holotype: Fig. 7: intracellular symbiotic dinoflagellate of the spinose planktonic foraminefer, Orbicula universa d' Orbigny; (Spero 1987: 316) Notes: Type culture maintained at Univ. California, Santa Barbara.
