The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Karenia mikimotoi (Miyake & Kominami ex Oda) Gert Hansen & Moestrup.
