The type species (holotype) of the genus Karenia is Karenia brevis (C.C.Davis) Gert Hansen & Moestrup.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Karlodinium digitatum (Z.B.Yang, H.Takayama, K.Matsuoka & I.J.Hodkiss) H.Gu, L.Chan & Z.Lu.
