The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodopeltis is Rhodopeltis australis (Harvey) Harvey.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Akalaphycus liagoroides (Yamada) Huisman, I.A.Abbott & A.R.Sherwood.
