California?; Notes: Unknown location? "Holotype: Figs. 1–25. Isotype: Embedded material deposited at University of Connecticut." (Watanabe & al. 2000: 603). "Epitype (designated here): The authentic strain UTEX 1445 cryopreserved in metabolically inactive state at the Culture Collection of Algae at the University of Texas, Austin, Texas, USA." Deposited by R.A. Lewin (3/65), suggesting it may have originated in California.

Adjective (Latin), growing in the sea (Stearn 1983).
