Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Bryocladia atlantica (Kapraun & J.N.Norris) Díaz-Tapia.

Distributional note
This species was introduced accidentally, probably via oysters from Japan and on multiple occasions, into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 209), being first found in the Etang de Berre (France) in 1969-71. It is now widely distributed in the Mediterranean. - (05 November 2015) - M.D. Guiry
