Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sellaphora pupula (Kützing) Mereschkovsky.

Lectotype locality: "Lebend in süssem Wasser bei Nordhausen!" [Lives in fresh water near Nordhausen, Germany].; (Mann & al. 2004: 472) Lectotype: BM; Slide 17918 (Mann & al. 2004: 472) Notes: Figs 4a-c, 17, 23-27 are designated epitypes by Mann et al. (2004: 472), to help clarify the nature of the lectotype (BM 17918). Fig. 17 is from Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (E): 'Blackford Pond, Dec. '83, mud (tissue), E16/4'.
