Nomenclatural note
Dodge (1982: 147) notes it is possible that Glenodinium obliquum Pouchet (1883) is the same as this species or it may be closely related. This needs further study. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Habitat note
Sandy sediments and epiphytic. - (11 June 2024) - M.D. Guiry
Usage note
Faust & Gulledge (2002: 23) notes C. monotis is considered toxic. It produces cooliatoxin, a neurotoxin. Please consult original reference for further details. According to Mohammad-Noor et al. (2013: 543, 544), cooliatoxin was described to be produced by C. monotis, as the genus Coolia was assumed to be monotypic at the time (Holmes et al., 1995: fig.1). They note that reexamination of the 6" and 4' plates (their study) and the published micrographs and drawings indicate that the toxic clone was C. tropicalis (Holmes et al. 1995). Harmful species (Lassus et al. 2017). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
