Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Karlodinium corsicum (Paulmier, Berland, Billard & Nezan) Siano & Zingone.
