Agardh, C.A. (1811). Dispositio algarum Sueciae, quam publico examini subjiciunt Carl Adolph Agardh... & Johannes Bruzelius, Scanus. Die xi decembris mdcccxi. p. ii. h. & l.s. pp. Pars 2: [i], 17-26. Lundae: Litteris Berlingianis.
Type Information
Type locality: "in Europae rivulis fluviisque pacatioribus"; (Linnaeus 1753: 1165) Lectotype (designated by Irvine in Spencer & al. 2009: 243; see below): OXF; (Spencer & al. 2009: 243) Notes: "Conferva fluviatilis L., Sp. Pl.: 1165. 1753 = Lemanea fluviatilis (L.) C. Agardh: Rhodophyceae - Lectotype (designated here by Irvine): [illustration in] Dillenius, Hist. Muse.: t. 7, f. 47. 1742. - Voucher: Herb. Dillenius (OXF) "Conferva fluviatilis lubrica setosa, Equiseti facie" (Spencer & al. eds 2009: 243). Turner (1804: 108) and Druce & Vines (1907: 190) determined the Herb. Dillenius material as C. fluviatilis and L. fluviatilis respectively. Silva (1952: 262) discussed the Historia Muscorum figure without selecting it as the type; he further (p. 272) commented that there was an authentically named specimen in LINN. The only relevant specimen is Herb. Linn. No. 1277.38 (LINN), but this is annotated only by F. Ehrhart and it is therefore not original material.'

Verification of Data
Users are responsible for verifying the accuracy of information before use, as noted on the website Content page.
Distributional note
Europe: Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, the UK [and Ireland]. Reported throughout Europe and there are DNA sequence data from numerous countries; however, specimens with this morphology and those with the L. fucina morphology have been shown to be genetically similar such that a revision using both morphological and DNA data is needed. Previous reports of this species from North America should be referred to L. occidentalis (western) and L. borealis (eastern). Records of this species from outside Europe need to be confirmed with DNA sequence data and were not included in the distribution of this species.
