The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Thorea hispida (Thore) Desvaux.

Type locality: "habite L'Adour [river], Dax, Landes, France"; (Thore 1800) Lectotype: J. Thore; "1801" [error?]; on rocks; P-JU; Herbier d'Antoine Laurent de Jussieu cat. no, 375-D, (Sheath, Vis & Cole 1993: 231-241) Notes: Isolectotypes: BM, L and MICH (673302).A date of 1801 is given for the lectotype in P-JU which is at odds with the date of the publication given by INA as 1800.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), hispid, covered with coarse rigid erect hairs or bristles harsh to the touch [or seeming so] (Stearn 1983).
