The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gyrodinium pellucidum (Wulff) J.Schiller.

Adjective (Latin), pellucid, translucent but not hyaline (Stearn 1983).
