The type species (holotype) of the genus Proterythropsis is Proterythropsis crassicaudata Kofoid & Swezy.

Type Information
Type locality: "The species was obtained mostly at Millport, in water samples, and, rarely, in tow-nettings, off Keppel Pier. Occasional specimens were obtained from elsewhere in the Clyde area, e.g. Loch Long, Loch Striven, Loch Fyne, Kilbrennan Sound." [Scotland]; (Marshall 1925: 183)
