Taxonomic note
Considered possibly conspecific with Rhodella violacea by Paasche & Throndsen (1970) and Athanasiadis (1996: 8). Nitschke et al. (2010) and Scott et al. (2011) concluded that Rhodella maculata and R. violacea were conspecific using type material from original cultures. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
