Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassall.

Status of Name

Source of Synonymy
Van Heurck, H. (1884). Synopsis des Diatomées de Belgique. Table Alphabetique. pp. 1-120. Anvers: J.F. Dieljens.

Type Information
Type locality: Bruxelles (Delogne): eaux douces; Lectotype: BM; 26835 (Trobajo & al. 2006: 1357) Notes: Type locality and habitat (Silva: Index Nominum Algarum). Trobajo et al. (2006: 1357) agree with Krammer and Lange-Bertalot (1988) that the lectotype should be chosen from among Neuchâtel slides. However, because of the poor quality of Cleve & Moller # 174, they designate slide BM 26835 (in the Natural History Museum, London) of Van Heurck #524 as the lectotype preparation.

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.
