Nomenclatural note
Illegitimate: unwarranted change of epithet for Conferva fluvatilis Linnaeus, the basionym for Lemanea fluvatilis. De Candolele refers to "Vauch. n. 48. t. 13. f. 6. Conf. n. 17 [an error for pl. 47; see Silva 1952: 262]. Garbary (1987: 212) refers to a combination "Conferva nigricans (De Candolle) Dillwyn 1802-1809: 17" but this combination does not appear in Dillwyn's British Confervae but rather the combination Conferva nigricans (Roth) Dillwyn based upon Chantransia nigricans Roth, 1806, to which Dillwyn (1809: 63) refers including the page number in Catalecta botanica. - (03 May 2024) - M.D. Guiry
