The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cosmarium is Cosmarium undulatum Corda ex Ralfs.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cosmarium moniliforme var. panduriforme (Heimerl) Schmidle.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), moniliform, cylindrical but contracted at regular intervals like a string of beads (Stearn 1983).
