The type species (lectotype) of the genus Oscillatoria is Oscillatoria princeps Vaucher ex Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Oxynema acuminatum (Gomont) Chatchawan, Komárek, Strunecky, Smarda & Peerapornpisal.

Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1983).
