Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilariopsis panamensis (W.R.Taylor) E.Y.Dawson.

Type locality: I. Taboga, Panama; (Taylor 1945: 231) Type: W.R. Taylor no. 39-625; 2 May 1939; abundant as dredged from a bottom of sand and coralline algae at 3.5-9.0 metres’ depth; Hancock Foundation; (Taylor 1945: 231) Notes: Type (cystocarpic and tetrasporic) dredged at sta. 960, between I. Taboga and I. Urava.
