Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mesophyllum brachycladum (Foslie) W.H.Adey.

Type locality: St Helena [Island]; (Woelkerling 1998: 332) Holotype: collector not indicated; date not indicated; dredged off St. Helena, presented [to BM] by W.H. Surton; BM; algal box collection 30 (including a label from Foslie with the number 10 and the name on it). (Woelkerling 1998: 332) Notes: Holotype fragments: TRH C16-3249, British Museum no. 10, includes slides 336 and 1360; PC, British Museum no. 10, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym). Athanasiadis & Ballantine (2014: Appendix I:1) insist that the holotype is in TRH and the BM material is an isotype.
