Nomenclatural note
De Clerck (2003) notes that Dictyota dentata Lamouroux the name usually applied to this species is illegitimate because the author cited F. atomarius S.G. Gmelin (1768: 125, pl. 10, fig.1) as a synonym and therefore should have used the epithet atomaria (Silva et al., 1987: 76). Moreover, F. atomarius represents a red algal species belonging to the genus Odonthalia. Dictyota mertensii is the oldest available name. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
