Type Information
Lectotype locality: Warrington, Otago, New Zealand; (Womersley 1967: 228) Lectotype: Herb. Agardh, LD; 48129 (Womersley 1987: 253) Notes: Phillips & Nelson (1998: 78) note that Womersley (1967: 228) lectotypified Z. turneriana with a specimen collected from Warrington, Otago (South Island, New Zealand) by Berggren in 1874-75 (LD 48129) but that this choice on which the modern understanding of the taxon is based, is untenable because the specimen would not have been available to Agardh when he described the species. They select LD 48145 (dedit Turner ex herbario [scr. C. Agardh] identified as Fucus interruptus) as the lectotype since it is consistent with Agardh's description and it corresponds to the present concept of the species. They add that the type locality may be in southern Australia, rather than New Zealand. It is probable that the specimen LD 48145, a small fragment attributed to the Turner herbarium, was taken from the plant illustrated in Plate 245 in Turner (1819). This specimen housed in the BM, was collected by Lambert in southern Australia and sent by Governor King.
