Nomenclatural note
Silva, Basson & Moe (1996) note: "The name Phycoseris uncialis was first used without a description (Kützing, 1843b: 297) with the Cape of Good Hope and Peru being mentioned as provenances and Suhr's manuscript name Ulva uncialis being cited in synonymy. The South African collection cited by Kützing was said to come from Table Bay (Drège, 1843: 111). Papenfuss (notes) confirmed that Suhr's specimens of U. uncialis came from Table Bay as well as from the "Kaffernküste''. Areschoug, when establishing U. capensis, cited "Ulva uncialis v. Suhr.%u2014Drège Docum. p. 111.'' and stated that specimens distributed under this name were juveniles of his new species. Because Kützing (1849: 475) had already proposed a new species for Drège's material (Phycoseris uncialis), Ulva capensis must be considered superfluous and hence illegitimate in accordance with Art. 52.1." - (16 September 2020) - M.D. Guiry
