Nomenclatural note
"This variety was recorded as common throughout the Mediterranean Sea by Ardissone (1874: 46, pl. VII and 1883: 253), who, however, credited the combination to J. Agardh. Actually, J. Agardh (1852: 659) proposed the combination N. punctatum var. ocellatum (J.V. Lamouroux) J. Agardh, but the resulting name is illegitimate being a later homonym of N. punctatum var. ocellatum (J.V.
