The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota mertensii (C.Martius) Kützing.

De Clerck (2003) notes that this is an illegitimate new name for Fucus atomarius S.G. Gmelin (1768: 125, pl. 10, fig.1) as Lamouroux should have adopted Gmelin's epithet. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic note
De Clerck (2003) notes that Lamouroux cited Fucus atomarius S. Gmelin (1768) as a synonym of this species. He also notes that Lamouroux erred in his taxonomic opinion, since F. atomarius is a representative of the red algal genus Odonthalia (Papenfuss, 1950: 189). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
