Type locality: West Indies [Mr. Greg]; (Huisman & Borowitzka 1990: 164) (Huisman & Borowitzka 1990: 164) Notes: Huisman & Womersley (1994: 116) note that the type is lost; lectotypified by Ellis & Solander, 1786, pl. 22, fig.4 (see Papenfuss et al., 1982: 416).

This is a marine species.

Habitat
Commonly found in tropical and subtropical seas (Huisman & Womersley 1994: 118). Usually on rocks thinly covered with sand, at depths ranging from intertidal rock pools to 15 m (Huisman (2006: 25).

Taxonomic notes
According to Silva et al. (1996), the name Galaxaura spongiosa has been misapplied to this species by G. Martens (1868: 25, 86-87) - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Collected at depths ranging from intertidal rock pools to 15 m; often found at sand/rock interfaces,attached to rock with its base lightly covered by sand (Huisman & Borowitzka 1990). - (18 July 2011) - G.M. Guiry

Habitat note
abundant on rocky reefs, rocks and shells of molluscs in the intertdidal zones of coral reef communities (Wiriyadamrikul et al. 2013). - (06 August 2013) - G.M. Guiry
