The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Aglaothamnion hookeri (Dillwyn) Maggs & Hommersand.

Lyngbye, “hoyviig prope Thorshavn Faeroe", 11 June 1817. PC Lyngbye, Faeroe, undated, labelled “Callithamnion roseum ß tenue", in Lyngbye’s hand. Comments: Lyngbye and C. Agardh obviously exchanged material extensively; C. Agardh made use of exchange material as the basis for both Ceramium scopulorum and Callithamnion scopulorum (q.v.).

Adjective (Latin), rose-coloured (Stearn 1983).
