Type locality: In mari Atlantico; (Agardh 1824: 51) Lectotype: LD; herb. alg. Agardh 31980 (Dixon & Irvine 1977: 140) Notes: The lectotype is from Cádiz, Spain.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), divaricate, spreading at a wide angle (Stearn 1983).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cylindrical, softly gelatinous, pale reddish-brown fronds, 2 mm wide, 200 mm long. Much branched, ultimate branchlets short, irregular, holdfast small, discoid.

Habitat
A summer annual (May or June-September or October), epiphytic on Polyides rotunda in lower tidal pools and in the shallow subtidal, widely distributed on western and south-western coasts, sporadic but often locally abundant, particularly in large, sandy pools.

Key Characteristics
Association with Polyides rotunda; gelatinous consistency, and profuse, almost pinnate branches.

Similar Species
Nemalion helminthoides is broader, deeper red in colour, and does not have as many branches; Nemalion does not occur in pools.
