Type locality: Specimum typicum (tetrasporacum) legit W.H. Harvey No. 1 in Insulis Amicorum, Polynesia, conservandum in herb. Hort. Bot. Neo-Eborascensis [Tonga Islands]; (Taylor 1966: 355) Type: W.H. Harvey; NY; (Yoshida 1998: 225) Notes: Friendly Islands Algae No. 1 (Lipkin & Silva, 2002: 45).

Taxonomic note
According to Silva et al., (1996) the following names have been misapplied to this species: Padina tenuis, Zonaria tenuis, Padina commersonii, Zonaria commersonii, Zonaria tenuis var. commersonii, Padina durvellei, Padina pavonia. Please consult the original text for full information. Also according to Silva et al. (1996) the taxon Vaughaniella rupicola Børgesen is a possible taxonomic synonym of this species.
