Eponomy
Named for Dr. A.V. Duthie (Augusta Vera) (1881-1963) of the University of Stellenbosch.

Nomenclatural note
According to Silva et al. (1996: 853) this species has been recorded under the invalid name Codium duthieae Setchell (or Setchell ex Papenfuss) by various authors. Please consult original reference for more details. Margaret Brookes (e-mail, 14 January 2021) writes" "Codium duthieae is named for Dr. A.V. Duthie (Augusta Vera, known as Vera or Avie) (1881-1963) who worked at the University of Stellenbosch between 1902 and 1939/40 mainly on cryptograms and the Stellenbosch flora. She established the Department of Botany and the herbarium and was not given the professorship of botany in 1921 which went to her past student G.C. Nel. According to Silva et al. (1996: 853) the following names have been misapplied to this species in the Indian Ocean by various authors; Codium elongatum, Codium tomentosum and Codium lindenbergii. ESU (evolutionary significant unit), Codium duthieae no. three contained specimens (from Arabian Sea) conforming to C. fastigiatum, C. duthieae and C. decortatum (Verbruggen et al. 2007: 244). - (11 May 2006) - G.M.
