Taxonomic notes
According to J.Agardh (1852 [1851-1863]: 641-642), the name Sphaerococcus lambertii has been misapplied to this species by Suhr (1834: 728-729); according to Papenfuss (notes) by Drège (1843: 157) and Krauss (1846: 210). According to Papenfuss (notes), the name Plocamium costatum has been misapplied to this species by Krauss (1846: 210). South & Skelton (2003: 728) incorrectly cite Chondrococcus hornemannii Lyngbye 1819 as the basionym of this species. See Leliaert et al. (2018) regarding the status of this species in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific where it may represent more than 21 biological species with the greatest biodiversity in the Western Coral Triangle. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Yang & Kim (2018: 212) "cautiously speculate that the significant variability in secondary metabolites among sites [Korea, Taiwan, Japan] and among specimens [lineages B-E] is due to different genetic populations of P. hornemannii, implying the existence of heterogeneous cryptic species". - (13 November 2018) - G.M. Guiry
